Safety First

Dodge Elementary Kindergarten classes participated in the 2nd Annual Kindergarten Health and Safety Fair on Friday, September 11, 2009. View highlights.

Each class rotated through 9 stations manned by community helpers from the Mobile area.  The organizations represented were as follows:

•1.     United States Coast Guard - A crew of 2 pilots and one mechanic landed a rescue helicopter on 
         campus and demonstrated rescue activities.
•2.     Mobile Fire and Rescue Dept - Pluggie the fire robot read a story about fire safety and taught 
         fire safety procedures.
•3.     Mobile Police Dept - Corporal Thompson discussed equipment and procedures. Students were
         able to get inside the patrol car.
•4.     American Lung Assoc. - Rebecca Beemer demonstrated the effects of smoking on our lungs.   
         She taught us the say ‘no' to tobacco and other addictive substances.
•5.     Planet Gymnastics - Ron Smith (also with MCPSS) taught trampoline safety procedures and some
         of the maneuvers that you can learn to do on a trampoline.
•6.     Mobile County Sheriff's Flotilla and Alabama Marine Police- Rick Drews and the other  
         flotilla/marine police volunteers demonstrated the importance of wearing a secure life jacket and
         how to save someone who is in distress in the water.
•7.     American Medical Response - Ms. Ann demonstrated proper handwashing procedures and 
         allowed the kids to try out the ambulance stretcher.
•8.     Alabama Department of Transportation (Safe Routes to School) - Chad Carpenter
         demonstrated how to choose the correct size bike and bike safety procedures.  Students were
         encouraged to wear helmets when riding bikes or skate boards.
•9.     Mobile County Public School Transportation Dept - Buster the bus robot taught bus safety 
         rules and procedures.

Community volunteers were on campus from 8:30 am until 2:00 pm.  Parents were invited to attend.  Many vendors provided stickers, pencils, pamplets for children to take home to share with families.
